Driving Sustainable Operations Across All Managed Hotels

The hospitality industry is rethinking how everyday operations can become more resource-efficient, responsible and environmentally conscious. Across all HMH-managed hotels, everyday operations are continuously rethought to become more resource-efficient, responsible, and environmentally conscious. Through practical initiatives focused on water conservation, food waste reduction, plastic reduction, and circularity, HMH managed hotels demonstrate how operational changes deliver meaningful environmental impact while supporting long-term efficiency.

For Hospitality Management Holding (HMH), sustainability is a fundamental operational requirement embedded across all its managed hotels. This commitment is reflected in a range of practical measures implemented across its portfolio, with properties in the Northern Emirates providing clear examples of how sustainability can be translated into day-to-day hotel operations.

At Coral Beach Resort Sharjah, for example, food waste management has become an important part of its green operations. The resort introduced a biodigester that processes food waste generated in its kitchens and converts it into greywater, which can then be used for landscape irrigation. The system demonstrates how waste can be transformed into a usable resource, creating a more circular approach to waste and water management while reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. The resort has also introduced an on-site water bottling plant, helping reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles. Complementing these efforts is the Coralganic Garden, where fruit and vegetables are grown locally for use in the resort's culinary operations, supporting shorter supply chains and greater awareness of responsible food production.

At Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel, technology is being applied to address one of hospitality's most important resources: water. The property introduced atmospheric water generators, which use humidity in the air to produce drinking water. The technology illustrates how individual hotels can explore alternative solutions to resource consumption, while reducing reliance on conventional bottled water and helping minimise plastic waste and associated transportation impacts.

Green operations also extend to the way hotels manage materials. Coral Beach Resort Sharjah and Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel have participated in textile circularity initiatives, diverting end-of-life linens and uniforms from landfill and giving these materials a second life through repurposing.

Beyond individual property initiatives, the sector is also moving towards greater collaboration. The launch of the Emirates Hospitality Sustainability Alliance at Coral Beach Resort Sharjah brings hospitality stakeholders together to share knowledge and develop practical approaches to challenges including water and energy consumption, food waste, procurement and resource efficiency.

Together, these practices illustrate how HMH's sustainability approach is being applied across its portfolio, with individual properties addressing specific resource and operational challenges through practical solutions. From transforming food waste into a usable resource to producing water from air humidity and reducing dependence on single-use plastics, Northern Emirates hotels are exploring solutions that combine environmental responsibility with operational efficiency.

As the UAE's tourism and hospitality sector continues to evolve, this approach highlights an increasingly important direction for the industry. Green operations are no longer optional, but an integral part of the guestexperience, back-of-house operations and long-term business strategy.
